Description
Summer is an important time to have fun, but also an excellent opportunity to boost reading and spelling progress for the upcoming school year.
This summer I am offering a small group reading intensive including multi-sensory, individualized lessons targeting decoding skills, reading comprehension and spelling utilizing the Orton-Gillingham approach. Learners will work on (depending on the students age and previous instruction):
sounds and letter formation for the 26 basic phonemes
long and short vowels and what makes them long and short (i.e. magic e, vowel teams, open syllables)
decoding words by identifying r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, digraphs & trigraphs, prefixes and suffixes and more
forming a complete and detailed sentence
practicing phrase-marked reading for natural expression
learning text chunking strategies for smoother delivery
improving reading accuracy
testing at the beginning and end of camp
*Students will be placed in a group no larger than 4 and will need to attend an informal evaluation session before start of camp (in person or virtual).
*Upon acceptance of your child’s enrollment, you will receive an invoice for a $200 non-refundable deposit. The total camp payment is due May 1st.
*We are located at WeWork, 200 Massachusetts Ave NW
Groups will be designed for readers with similar needs, so please respond to the interest survey below OR set up a complimentary consultation call ASAP to determine if your child is a good fit.

A water bottle and a snack. Everyone will be provided with learning materials on the first day which will stay at camp, with the exception of one take home folder that should be brought back and forth each day.
-
There are no makeup sessions or refunds for missed days, so it is strongly encouraged that your child attends every session. If absence is due to an emergency or sickness, we can do our best to give you makeup credits to be used for a future individual tutoring session.
-
Yes! Each child will exit the summer program with a report outlining all skills covered as well as their current abilities in reading, spelling and fluency. I am also happy to connect with any member of your child’s learning team at any time.

Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory structured literacy approach for students of all ages who struggle in reading, writing and spelling. Although Orton-Gillingham instruction benefits all students, it is especially helpful for students with dyslexia, auditory processing, memory, reading and language difficulties.
Key points about Orton-Gillingham:
Multisensory: Uses sight, hearing, touch, and movement to reinforce learning.
Structured and Sequential: Presents information in a logical order, building on previously learned concepts.
Diagnostic and Prescriptive: Tailored to individual needs based on assessment.
Explicit Instruction: Clearly teaches the relationships between letters and sounds.
Language-based: Focuses on understanding the structure of language.
The approach is named after Samuel T. Orton, a neuropsychiatrist, and Anna Gillingham, an educator and psychologist.
